Last week, I gave a special lecture in a psychology and cognitive engineering undergraduate class at a university.
The title was 'User Research for User-Centered Product Development'.
I do not give lectures in school lectures or in places where I pay money to listen. Because I can't do school lectures because I don't have a license, and I don't do paid lectures at all because I feel like I'll have to show off once I've done it. Others say personal brands and stuff, but I can't do that because I'm lazy.
However, once or twice a year, classes taught by acquaintances or special lectures at companies requested through acquaintances. That's because I don't think it's well known to other people. This year, another acquaintance who I couldn't refuse asked for me.
If I don't give a presentation, I see things that disappear from the air just through words and disappear from my head. So, my thoughts these days are that I should make a presentation. It's not because I know what I know, I'm not making a presentation, but because of the presentation, I feel like I'm going to organize what I've done.
One of the things I've been trying to sort out is what kind of contribution user research can make to product development for a product to be successful, and when and what research can be used in product development.
At the same time, I asked an undergraduate student taking a cognitive engineering class to tell the story of HCI and HCI practitioners, so I thought to put this together.
However, since the target is an undergraduate student, it is composed of understanding the concept of user-centeredness, the relationship between user-centered product development and product success, and showing major examples of user research methods rather than a detailed description of the research method.
Among the cases that I think, there are no security issues in the company, and through user research, cases that can show cases of user-centered products were selected.
Through the special lecture, I had an opportunity to organize the introductory things I was going to prepare, and the students could know how cognitive engineering and HCI are being used in product development, and also how our company's products can develop user-centered products. I think it's an opportunity to let people know if they're doing user research for that.
I asked the marketing team to bring souvenirs, but I thought about how to give the students a set number of souvenirs on the bus and throughout the class. I decided to show you the last video. Fortunately, the number of souvenirs brought was a little more than double the number of participants, so it was decided to give it to the winner by playing rock, paper, scissors with the person next to him or with others. This was the most difficult part of this class.
I have a bad brain, so when I accept a theory or concept, I need to understand its origins and understand the cases so that I can understand and remember it. Basically, people understand as much as they know and understand as much as they can, but I don't remember or understand at all until I have my own insight because I don't have enough memory or comprehension.
I spent two hours talking to undergraduates about the concept of user-centeredness and my understanding of user research. I tried to explain easily with my own insights, such as HCI in ergonomics, cognitive engineering, marketing in business administration, strategy in business administration, and product strategy, but I do not know if it was delivered well. Seeing the reaction that seemed like fun, it seems like it was fun.
Before I forget, here's a summary of what I felt or asked:
This is also the reason why it is difficult to recruit participants for field research.
talking about research ethics Marriage information company, duo that posted the interview details on their website without consent talked about the case of However, one of the students said that his friend appeared in the video. I can't remember whether or not I called my friend right away during the lecture, but when I talked to my friend, he said he didn't know he was on Duo Home. However, it is said that an acquaintance in the duo interviewed her that she was using it as internal data. The world is really small. Also, because of these companies, it becomes difficult to do user research.
I explained the history and various examples of the concept of user-centeredness, but I felt that I was lacking a bit.
One of the questions is, "Google does it with technology, isn't Google user-centric?" it was I said that Google is a technology-focused engineer company, but user-centricity is the most important thing, and it seems to be trying to achieve this through technology in that way.
I talked about the history of ergonomics to HCI and the current user experience, which also seemed to be lacking in my explanation.
I can't remember the question, but "Where is the academic foundation of HCI?" It was meant to be a question.
I'm not in academia, so I'm not good at making that definition, and I don't have the authority. But in my opinion, I said that HCI is computer science, ergonomics, cognitive engineering, business administration, design, etc. at the applied level, followed by psychology, philosophy, and cognitive science. It is important to note that, since it is an interdisciplinary study without an undergraduate course, one foot is in the other discipline and the other foot is in the HCI, so if you do not do well, you may lose your identity. He told me that it should be more than a double specialist, but the foundation should be built into one.
It is also a topic that can even lead to the discussion of whether HCI is a science. But even 30 years ago, computer science was not a discipline. It was merely an extension of the field of application of mathematicians and physicists. But now computer science is sometimes called science. Of course, the issue of whether computer science is an engineering or a science still remains.
As a result, whether or not the times have requested it, I think that the field of HCI has only expanded the field of application in academia. If there is an academic background to make a product more user-centered, I think it is HCI.
I use the term 'user research' to do consumption-oriented marketing in marketing as well as 'User Experience Research', 'Design Research', and 'User Research' that HCI talks about. When I included the 'consumer survey'. This is because market research also studies consumers if it approaches consumer-centered.
This broad use of the term user research may lead to disagreements in the HCI and marketing fields. Last year, at the Korea HCI Research Society, 'User research strategy' panel discussion In the process of product development, from my point of view, I only study the user side, not technology research, in any field. However, since user research and market research are becoming more and more blurred, they can distinguish between them and can play their own roles.
This special lecture is introductory, so it seems to have been prepared to understand how user-centered product development affects success and what methods are available. It is said that teaching is the last stage of learning, and what I felt after preparing the presentation and giving the presentation was that I learned more.
